Sport & Performance Mental Skills Coaching

What is Mental Skills Coaching and How it Can Help You to Perform at Your Peak:mental skills

The roots of sport psychology and mental skills coaching date back to the late 1800s/early 1900s. It began as a research-based specialty, looking to understand why some athletes are more successful than others. The research focused on athlete abilities, skill-building, and how the mind impacts how we perform. As Epictetus wrote in 135 A.C.E., “Men are disturbed, not by things, but by the principles and notions which they form concerning things” (translated by Elizabeth Carter). How our mind reacts or prepares for situation impacts what we do and say.

Today’s applied sport psychology professionals and mental skills trainers often focus on coaching, consulting, education and research. The targets are to strengthen performance, motivation, and developing skill strategies. While working with athletes is the first thought most have, those interested in improving their health, or work in other performance-based specialties (military [current and retired], music, education, business, firefighters, police, etc.) can also benefit from the use of mental skills building.
